Top 10 (Fun) Facts About Poole Harbour

When you’re standing on the deck of Skyfall with a glass of champagne in hand, looking out over the water, it’s easy to get lost in the sheer beauty of Poole Harbour. But beneath the sparkling surface and rolling heathland lies a history filled with pirates, Romans, and hidden treasures.

To help you impress your guests on your next private charter, here are our top ten favourite facts about this incredible stretch of the Dorset coast.

1. Is Poole Harbour the largest natural harbour in the world?

This is the most common question we get! While Sydney Harbour (Australia) usually claims the top spot, Poole Harbour is widely considered the world's second-largest natural harbour. It covers approximately 14 square miles (36 square kilometres) of calm, sheltered water. That massive surface area is what makes it such a playground for sailors, kite surfers, and, of course, our own private charters. Whether it’s technically second or third, depending on how you measure "volume vs surface area," there is no denying its scale is breathtaking.

2. How deep is Poole Harbour?

You might be surprised to learn that for such a massive body of water, the harbour is remarkably shallow. The average depth is only about 48cm (less than 2 feet!). This shallow nature is exactly why exploring with a knowledgeable skipper is so important. On a charter with us, we stick to the deep-water channels, the underwater highways that let us cruise smoothly while you enjoy the scenery without worrying about the tides.

3. It’s home to "Millionaires' Row"

As you cruise past the Sandbanks peninsula, you’ll see why it’s often called Britain's Palm Beach. By land area, this small strip of golden sand is one of the most expensive places to live on the planet, frequently ranking fourth worldwide, behind Hong Kong and Tokyo. From the water, you get the best view of these stunning "super-homes". Modern architectural marvels of glass and steel that overlook the harbour entrance. It’s the perfect backdrop for imagining which one you’d buy when you win the lottery!

4. Who was Harry Paye? (the pirate of Poole)

Long before superyachts, Poole Harbour was the stomping ground of the notorious pirate Harry Paye. In the late 14th and early 15th centuries, "Arripay" (as the terrified Spanish called him) used the harbour's twisting channels and islands to hide his fleet and his loot. The locals still celebrate his legacy with the annual Harry Paye Day on Poole Quay. Legend has it that Old Harry Rocks might be named after him, though others say it’s named after the Devil himself.

5. It is the birthplace of the Scout movement

In 1907, Lord Baden-Powell chose Brownsea Island for an experimental camp that changed the world. He took 20 boys from different social backgrounds to the island to teach them outdoor skills, teamwork, and resilience. That small gathering evolved into the worldwide Scout and Guide movement we know today. Brownsea Island remains a global pilgrimage site for Scouts, and seeing it from the water offers a glimpse into the secluded woodland where it all began.

6. Where is the "Amazon of Dorset"?

If you ask us to head up the Wareham Channel on your flexible charter day, you’ll see the landscape shift dramatically. The open water gives way to winding river bends, tall reeds, and overhanging willow trees. Locals affectionately know this tranquil, wild area as "The Amazon of Dorset." It feels miles away from the bustle of the main harbour; a hidden gem that is best experienced at a slow, relaxing cruise speed.

7. It’s a sanctuary for red squirrels

Brownsea Island is one of the few remaining strongholds in southern England for the indigenous red squirrel. Unlike their grey cousins, reds are shy and rare, thriving here because the surrounding water protects the island. If we anchor near the island for lunch, keep your eyes peeled on the shoreline trees; you might just spot a flash of russet red darting through the pines.

8. The Romans were here first

The harbour has been a strategic port for millennia. In 43 AD, the Roman Second Augustan Legion, led by the future Emperor Vespasian, landed right here in the harbour to begin their conquest of the South West. They established a major supply base at Hamworthy (then known as Moriconium). They recognised early on what we appreciate today: this location offers the perfect protection from the elements.

9. How many islands are in Poole Harbour?

While everyone knows Brownsea, the harbour actually hosts an archipelago of five main islands: Brownsea, Green, Furzey, Round, and Long Island. Each has its own unique character. Green Island has a history of eccentric residents, including potter Guy Sydenham, while Furzey is known for its exclusive private oil wells (hidden deeply within the trees). Exploring this "island hopping" route gives you a perspective of the harbour that land-lubbers simply never get to see.

10. The return of the white-tailed eagles

In recent years, the skies over Poole Harbour have welcomed back a prehistoric giant: the White-tailed Eagle. Often called "flying barn doors" due to their massive 2.5-meter wingspan, these birds were extinct in England for over two centuries. Thanks to a successful reintroduction program, they are back. Seeing one of these majestic creatures soaring above Skyfall is a spine-tingling reminder of how wild this area still is.
